It is reported that Tesla is preparing to validate its engineering approach for high-volume manufacturing of a new version of the 4680 by September. That involves:
1) Finally implementing a dry-coated cathode
2) Scaling up a fix to an issue where the jelly roll would collapse into the core of the cell
Tesla has already produced one battery pack with these new battery cells for a Cybertruck. Tesla has said that they expect their in-house 4680 battery packs to be cheaper than comparable battery packs from suppliers by the end of the year. Despite the 4680 using wet-coated cathode material from the cell makers of LG Chem, Tesla should be saving quite a bit of money by producing the cells in-house from shipping, third-party profit margins, tax credits, etc.
